In Guatemala, Benjamin Lopez’s gorgeous fruit set has great potential for his 2020 harvest. Of course, the trees’ potential is uncertain with changing climates, especially rainfall, and this uncertainty and vulnerability is deeply troubling. We seek out coffee from producers who, like us, give a shit about the planet, and we pay additional premiums to those who are transitioning away from chemical-dependent farming towards regenerative agriculture. It’s not too late to buy some stunners that lead to fresh purchases in March next year, and it’s a great way to get a leg up on the 2020 season and contribute to reduce producer uncertainty. We’ve been buying coffee from Neil Guarnizo for years, and he’s been really focusing on making sure that cherries are picked when they’re dark red and perfectly ripe. It’s been a challenge to re-train and ask pickers on his farm to adjust their cherry-picking habits- some pickers who move around the country with shifting harvests are not used to selecting cherries based on their ripeness, but rather are accustomed to the traditional style of stripping branches to get all cherries at once. His work is obvious- Neil’s coffee adds heaps of sweetness to the incoming fresh crop Tarqui Pequeños lot this year! ✨DM your sample requests ✨

Ever had a coffee that tasted bonkers great even a year after it was harvested? Slow and patient drying under shade cloth in well-ventilated spaces keeps coffee stable, and helps to maintain quality for many months. In Planadas- our favorite municipality of Tolima- Jorge Rojas measures the daily temperature and humidity in his dryer to understand and monitor how the coffee in parchment is drying, and we love him deeply for it.

Alirio Muñoz and his wife Anayibe Ortiz are members of the group Los Guacharos, a group of friends and neighbors near Bruselas, Huila collectively working to transition away from synthetic chemical inputs in their farming, and towards a more active, biodynamic form of agriculture using natural brews and foliars from products on their farms and micro-nutrients found in the virgin forests near their farms. This year, Alirio is working towards a goal of 50% organic agriculture. Group members say that it can be scary to lessen their dependence on synthetic chemicals- they worry about lowered yields, and increased prevalence of pests and diseases, and we understand their concerns. We’ve supported Alirio and Los Guacharos with workshops on organic methods, and regular check-ins to measure successes and challenges on his farm. This year, we’re proud to have bought more coffee from Los Guacharos than we ever have before. Our popular Los Guacharos blend has coffee from Alirio and 11 other producers this season. It’s a solid blend component, and stands alone beautifully as well. Samples will be in the US early next week- request yours soon! 🇨🇴
